When the Army Surgeon General orders the collection of American Indian crania and remains for the Army Medical Museum during the mid-to-late 1800s, army personnel and Indian hunters comply, making considerable money from the sale of Native remains. Over 4,000 heads are collected from beheadings and scalping bounties, and from battlefields, burial grounds, POW camps, hospitals, fresh graves, and burial scaffolds from across the country. Half of the remains are donated to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution.
